Dear Friend,

I didn't think I'd learn this from broccoli...

Selenium-Enriched Broccoli May Help Prevent Cancer: Government Study On Rats



Date: Nov 28, 2001

A recent cancer study conducted at the University of Illinois at Chicago revealed a shocking development.

A diet containing selenium-enriched broccoli may protect against breast and prostate cancer, according to the results of a study in laboratory rats.

In their study, Dr. John W. Finley and his colleagues injected 90 rats with a cancer-causing chemical. They then divided the rats into two study groups, one that was fed a high-selenium enriched broccoli as part of their regular diet for 22 weeks and another that was fed selenium without the broccoli.

The rats that were fed the high-selenium broccoli had a lower incidence of tumors at the end of the study period and fewer tumors overall than the rats fed the selenium alone.

In order to protect against colon cancer, one must take into consideration not only the total intake of selenium, but also the form in which selenium is supplied in a particular food or supplement, Finley and his colleagues note.

The effects of broccoli may be due to the complex interaction of many different compounds rather than simply having one by itself.

However, Finley said that he generally does not advocate supplements. "People should try to get the (nutrients) they need from their diet," he told Reuters Health.
